UPDATE: Service has been restored as of 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, per multiple reports.

A fiber optic cable was cut in multiple places at an undisclosed location, causing Verizon customers across northeastern North Carolina to lose all service Wednesday evening.

Phone and data for Verizon and other companies that utilize the same network went down starting around 5 p.m., with numerous reports from customers on social media coming in from all parts of the area around the same time.

A Verizon spokesperson said Thursday morning their engineering crews worked overnight to restore multiple fiber cuts.

“Due to the proximity to a gas line, the team has been working with an abundance of caution, using more meticulous, yet slower, methods for fixing the fiber cut,” the spokesperson said. “Crews will remain on site until the fiber is fully restored. We understand how important reliable connectivity is and apologize for any inconvenience.”

Customers reported early Thursday that the Verizon website said that service was not expected to be restored until after noon today.
