Theodore Roosevelt Meekins, Jr., fondly named “Sport” and “Teddy”, was born to the late Theodore Meekins, Sr., and Lila Odessa Farrow Meekins on February 4, 1932. He peacefully transitioned from labor to reward on Friday Morning, April 18, 2025, at Duke Hospice Hope in Durham, NC, surrounded by his family.

Roosevelt joined the Haven Creek Baptist Church at an early age. He faithfully attended for most of his life until his health would not allow him to do so. He was educated in the Dare County Public School System and graduated High School in 1951. He enlisted in the US Army in 1951 and earned an Honorable Discharge in 1953 after being wounded in the Korean War. He worked many jobs during his lifetime, including: Barrier Island tour guide, Wachovia janitorial staff, Dare County Public Schools bus driver, and Dowdy’s Amusement Park ride operator.

Preceding him in death were his mother and father, and siblings: William Meekins, Wilma Meekins Keys, Melford Meekins, Maggie Meekins Credle, Ossie Meekins Dunston, Annie Meekins Drake, and Nicholas Meekins; and grandson, Lopez Mullen.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughters, Shelia Stanton, Sharon Cox (Raymond Earl Sr.), Sharee Wilder all of Durham, NC and Carrie Denise Major-Jackson (Kenny) of Charleston, SC; six grandchildren, Eugene Mullen (Teresa), Shorne Burns (Bradley), Raymond Cox, Jr., Nichole Cox, Joseph Cox (Tyrone), and Davona Jackson; 14 Great-Grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Teddy’s funeral will be held at 11 am on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Haven Creek Church in Manteo. Interment will follow at Haven Creek Cemetery. A viewing and visitation will be held from 6-8 pm on Friday, April 25, 2025, at Gallop Funeral Chapel in Nags Head. Please share expressions of sympathy with the family at gallopfuneralservices.com.
