The Dare County Parks and Recreation Department’s Hatteras Island Division recently announced that the gymnasium located inside the Fessenden Center will continue to be closed for a portion of May while the facility’s roof and siding are being replaced.
“While the roofing and siding project are concluding, there is additional work to be completed inside the gym,” stated the Parks and Recreation update. “We feel confident this project will conclude in May. When this happens, we will issue a revised calendar and release the opening date for the gym via our Facebook page, as well as a press release from Dare County.”
The project is part of Dare County’s ongoing efforts to renovate and improve outdated Parks and Recreation Department facilities throughout the county in order to better serve members of the community.

Administrative offices located within the Fessenden Center will remain open and operate normally as the repairs are conducted. All fitness classes scheduled in the gymnasium will continue to be held in the activity room until the project is complete.
Pickleball play will still be available on the facility’s outdoor courts, which are open for use daily from dawn until 10 p.m.
While the roof and siding replacement project is underway at the Fessenden Center, patrons should also expect continued closures to sections of the parking lot. The Dare County Parks and Recreation Department’s Hatteras Island Division appreciates the public’s patience and understanding as they work to improve the facilities for the community.
