Cleron Overton Carawan, 91, of Wanchese, NC, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2025, surrounded by family and loved ones. Born on December 10, 1933, in Swan Quarter, NC, he lived a full life defined by hard work, devotion to family, and a deep love for the water.

Cleron proudly served his country in the United States Army, exemplifying honor and dedication. After his military service, he became a respected entrepreneur and businessman. He was a founding figure in the development of Southern Shores, NC, as a partner in Southern Shores Realty Company and owner of Carawan Construction, building many of the community’s earliest homes. He also owned and operated Carawan Seafood, reflecting his lifelong connection to the sea. A commercial fisherman for many years, Cleron found joy and purpose on the water, a legacy that endures in the memories of those who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ella and Percy Carawan.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Amber Ross Carawan; his son, Benjie Carawan and wife Nancy; and grandchildren, Ryan Carawan (Carree) and Taylor Ronne (Tyler). He was the proud great-grandfather of Breanne, Carson, Rylynn, and Dashiell. Also holding fond memories of “Uncle Cleron” are Kyle, Amanda, and Joshua. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, April, brother-in-law, Donnie, and cherished family friend, Tammy Brooks.

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 2, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Twiford Outer Banks Chapel in Manteo, NC. Friends are also welcome at the Carawan residence at 897 Old Wharf Road, Wanchese, NC, at all other times.

A funeral service to celebrate Cleron’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Roanoke Island Christian Fellowship in Manteo, with Pastor Wayne Stanberry officiating. Following the service, all are invited to join the family for refreshments. At 3:00 p.m., a graveside committal service will be held at Soule Cemetery in Swan Quarter, NC.

Cleron’s legacy lives on in the family he loved, the homes he built, and the waters he cherished. He will be deeply missed.
